OPINION: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Beneficial or Malicious?
The scorching weather of Southern California is enough for almost anyone to dump a freezing bucket of water over themselves. The popular trend of pouring freezing water over oneself is now commonly known as the ALS ice bucket challenge. ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which is a disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS slowly spreads throughout the body, as motor neurons running throughout the spinal cord that connects to every muscle of the body slowly being to die off. As the motor neurons die off, the victim of the disease is left virtually paralyzed since the brain can no longer control the muscles of the body.
The popular trend of pouring freezing water over oneself is now commonly known as the ALS ice bucket challenge Each time a video is uploaded on social media with the hashtag #icebucketchallenge, a donation is made towards ALS research. The person doing the video nominates friends or family members to also complete the ice bucket challenge in 24 hours. More than 17 million videos have been posted on social media sites of participants accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge, helping the ALS Association raise over 114 million dollars. There has been controversy whether the challenge has led to a positive environment, or has instead just contributed to the drought, clearly evident in beloved California.
According to Jason Ruiz from the Long Beach Post , six million gallons of water have been used in the name of ALS. Keep in mind, many of the buckets thrown are because of the popularity of it, not because there is genuine awareness and concern for ALS. It's true that the ice bucket challenge has brought a soaring amount of donations but in a way that has led to the immature use of water. California is currently in the worst drought in decades. Due to the drought there isn’t enough water to irrigate crops, affecting farmers and the farm workers. Rice farmers don’t seem to have enough water for their fields. Farm owners have tried to drill for groundwater but they still can’t keep up with the need. The farm owners find themselves in the position where they have to sell their land. Less of their product is being sold so they can’t keep up with their bills.
The Californian drought has been brought to the attention of governor Jerry Brown. He has called California into a state of water conservation. This act is being enforced by undercover rangers that go through neighborhoods. If a citizen is spotted wasting water, they will be given a $500 ticket. The question is, is it really worth paying a $500 dollar ticket for wasting water? Yes, the ALS organization is doing a wonderful thing but, be wise and save the water if you are planning to donate. Remember we all play an important role in this struggle.
